Summary : The Director Biotechnology R&D-Strawberry provides leadership and strategic direction for the R&D Strawberry team, through the building, management, and scaling of a strategic business dedicated to providing innovative advancements in strawberry development. Responsible for leading all activities including new product development including creating and identifying new and novel science for crop success. Responsible for all areas of strawberry product research including understanding molecular technology, field agronomy, and regulatory requirements. Additionally, responsible for introduction of new technology enhancement into the research area. Responsible for leading scientists to successfully bring a product to market. Able to identify appropriate partnerships that would support the strategic initiatives of the strawberry team. Capable of representing the company in all related technical matters of high significance. Responsible for the scientific and career growth of employees.
Responsibilities:
Technical Strategy: Creates, communicates, executes, and sustains strategic technical initiatives. Scientific Product Development: Leads discussions for accomplishing long and short term scientific objectives within strawberry research. Brings technical and scientific expertise to bear on project team issues.
Publish/Communicate/Participate in the scientific community: Drives initiatives that will significantly increase the scientific expertise and knowledge sharing for the strawberry R&D team. Submits publications and communications to continue leveraging scientific expertise. Additionally serves as the ambassador and representative in science for strawberry research.
Familiarity with Regulatory systems: Collaborates on regulatory submissions and provides necessary analysis, scientific expertise, and assistance. Integrates science, business, and intellectual property when addressing regulatory issues.
Understanding of the market: Monitors external competitors and gathers competitive intelligence. Establishes and maintains partnerships with all research collaborators to leverage Simplot intellectual property. Establishes formal relationships via research agreements. Assists in the negotiation of terms and facilitation of drafting of agreements. Fosters close business ties between SPS and key Simplot business, technical and legal units. Actively participates in promoting the technical marketing plan through professional science and trade meetings. Disseminates information on Simplot technologies and establishes new contacts.
Oversight and supervision of staff: Supervises the research staff. Sets departmental and team goals and provides evaluations of progress toward these goals. Promotes professional growth opportunities for staff. Ensures adherence to professional standards and ethics of prospect research. Secures intellectual property with legal staff and ensure publication of results when appropriate.
Requirements:
Doctoral degree (Ph.D) or equivalent in Plant Biotechnology or Related Discipline
Ten plus years related experience and/or training.
A minimum of 10 years of practical experience in the field of plant biotechnology.
Demonstrated proficiency in all of the concepts and components of biotechnology including plant physiology, plant transformation, recombinant DNA and molecular biology, protein and nucleic acid biochemistry, genomics, proteomics, botany and agronomy.
Demonstrated proficiency in leading or significantly participating on a team responsible for the commercialization of a biotech crop.
