Biosciences and Biotechnology Student Intern - Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory - Livermore, CA
NATURE AND SCOPE OF ASSIGNMENT
The Biosciences and Biotechnology Division offers continuing students (undergraduate and graduate) and Bachelors and Masters recent graduates within one year the opportunity to engage in practical research experience to further their educational goals. Opportunities include both computational and experimental research on problems associated with bioenergy, microbial communities, biodefense, and innate immunity.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
AT THE UNDERGRADUATE 706.1 LEVEL (NON-EXEMPT):
- Students will work with biologists, biochemists and computational scientists engaged in research on specific projects, including co-culture of bacteria to breakdown cellulose and produce hydrogen, bacterial biofilm formation and interactions with semiconductor materials for hydrogen production, microbial enzyme catalyzeddeconstruction of lignin and cellulose for biofuel processing, biochemical pathway inference from fenomic sequences, and computational modeling of protein structure from sequence information.
- Under close supervision, will participate in research in assigned area.
- Gather and analyze data and perform literature searches in support of scientific research.
- Present work through presentations and/or poster sessions.
- Perform all assignments in accordance with ES&H, security, and business practice requirements and policies.
IN ADDITION AT THE GRADUATE 706.2 AND RECENT GRAD 712.0 LEVEL (EXEMPT):
- Under limited direction and supervision will conduct research in assigned area.
- Report and translate data using common software packages on a PC and/or Macintosh computer.
- Performs technical assignments of a basic degree of complexity and provide advanced technical support to scientist in scientific research and development projects.

QUALIFICATIONS
AT THE UNDERGRADUATE 706.1 LEVEL (NON-EXEMPT):
- Must be a continuing college or university student in good standing at an accredited institution pursuing an undergraduate degree in biochemistry, biophysics, computational biology, or a related field.
- Ability to apply basic scientific principles to solve technical problems.
- Demonstrated effective communication skills.
- Ability to present and communicate concepts and ideas.
- Experience working with personal computers and familiarity with Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
IN ADDITION AT THE GRADUATE 706.2 AND RECENT GRAD 712.0 LEVEL (EXEMPT):
- Must be a continuing college or university student in good standing at an accredited institution pursuing a graduate degree.
- Demonstrated academic achievement in biology, biochemistry, chemistry or a related field.
- Experience applying basic scientific principles to solve technical problems.
- Ability to operate PC and/or Macintosh computers to translate and report scientific data.
DESIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES
- GPA of 3.0 or above.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Pre-Placement Medical Exam: A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.
Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
