About the Biological Therapeutics Group

Novartis is committed to developing biologics as drugs, and the company is making significant investments in this area throughout the organization. In the Biological Therapeutics group in Emeryville, our focus is on the development of biologics for the treatment of cancer patients. In particular, we work on the generation and characterization of therapeutic antibodies and antibody-like molecules, as well as the identification and validation of the targets that serve as the basis for the new drug development activities.

About the position:

We are seeking a highly motivated and innovative senior research scientist with demonstrated expertise in cancer biology, a keen interest in target discovery, novel antibody generation technologies, and experience in biologics drug development to lead a dynamic group dedicated to the discovery and development of novel biotherapeutics for cancer. In particular, this position will focus on the development of antibody drug conjugates, and novel biologic format drugs for a variety of cancer indications. The successful candidate will be responsible for defining the strategy and for building creative approaches to discover and progress antibody-based therapies for cancer. The candidate will oversee and be responsible for a large research group that does discovery, validation, selection, and characterization of drug candidates and that helps define the clinical utility of its projects.

As the Director of the Biotherapeutics Oncology group you will be required to supervise and develop PhD/BS/MS level scientists, manage programs and deliverable, timelines and budgets. You will be a member of the Emeryville Oncology site leadership team, as well as a senior member of the global oncology team. This position requires excellent organizational skills, creativity, enthusiasm and the ability to work in a highly collaborative matrixed global environment. The successful candidate will be expected to possess a significant experience in bringing biologics into early clinical development and have a robust publication record.

Minimum requirements               Qualifications:

• Ph.D. in Oncology, Tumor Immunology, Cell Biology, or other relevant field, with at least 15 years of postgraduate experience.

• Demonstrated solid track record of scientific achievements and strong leadership in matrix-based environment is essential.

• In depth knowledge of cancer-associated signaling pathways and/or models of cancer is required.

• In-depth knowledge of biologics drug discovery and experience with transitioning biological therapeutics projects into the clinic required.

• Experience in antibody drug conjugates and novel Antibody formats preferred, and a demonstrated track record of innovation required

• Exceptional written, verbal, and team communication skills are essential.

• Excellent management skills and demonstrated ability to work with and mentor PhD and non-PhD level scientists
