Hays Life Sciences : Research Scientist / Project Leader

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Research Scientist / Project Leader to join a fantastic in vitro diagnostics company specializing in cancer biomarker identification / validation and IVD product development.

They have a brilliant R&D pipeline, which includes biomarkers for cancer screening, diagnosis, staging, therapy selection and relapse monitoring. The company have recently set up their R&D facilities and are based at a premier site for scientific and technological innovation. They also offer development and reference laboratory services to global leaders in the field of cancer diagnostics.

They are currently exploring innovative technical solutions for the measurements of biomarker expression in immunostained sections using a high-throughput, fully automated image analysis pipeline which is being used by their scientists to develop diagnostic, prognostic and predictive assays for different tumour types.

Job summary
A research scientist within Research and Development is primarily responsible for the initiation and execution of research and development in line with the corporate goals of the company, and in compliance with its regulatory and quality obligations within the IVD industry. As a project leader, you are involved in the day to day planning and execution of laboratory research, and you will lead one or more project teams to the conclusion of your projects. You will maintain a broad knowledge of latest principles in the field of in vitro diagnostics and biomarkers with special emphasis on cancer biomarker discovery and cell / molecular biology related techniques. You will make contributions to scientific literature, conferences and the development of patent applications.

Responsibilities/daily tasks:
Deliver R&D goals within budget and timeline as agreed with COO and CEO.
Administrative leadership of a group, maintain good morale within the group and conduct twice yearly appraisals.
Scientific leadership of one or more project teams as required.
Develop and present detailed planned and costed work plans for projects.
Ensure full quality and regulatory compliance of groups and project teams in all company related activities.
Maintain oversight of project teams' work and data output, identify issues early and respond appropriately.
Deliver project work plans on time and within budget.
Work closely with other project leaders to minimize issues arising from project staff being allocated across a matrix, with shared resources.
Assure out-sourced projects are conducted to company quality standards and requirements.
Manage relationships with external contractors and consultants to the benefit of the company.
Maintain relationships and interactions with the Scientific Advisory Board and other Key Opinion Leaders relevant to company activities.
Ensure IP and patentable inventions are protected for the company.

Qualifications required:
PhD in a relevant scientific discipline.
Minimum 2 years experience in a regulated industry, preferably in vitro diagnostic industry.
People management experience - line management or matrix management.
Excellent track record with publications in high impact factor journals is desirable.

Relation of the position to others in the company:
Line manager with up to 5 direct reports.
Project leader of project teams.
Peer interface with support functions within the company - operations and purchasing.
Direct interface with Scientific Advisory Board and relevant Key Opinion Leaders
