Job Title: Microbiomics Science Leader
Salary: Competitive + Car Allowance

Location: Port Sunlight (Near Liverpool and Chester) preferred but Colworth in Bedfordshire would also be considered. Some relocation assistance may be available.
Travel: 20% - (Weekly travel within the UK and 1-2 Global trips per year)   

ABOUT THE ROLE
Unilever invests over €1 billion every year in research and development, and have established laboratories around the world where our scientists explore new thinking and techniques, applying their expertise to build our future business.

We are currently recruiting a Microbiomics Science Leader within our Strategic Science Group, part of the  Research & Development  function of the Unilever Business.

This role will allow the successful candidate to lead a Unilever Research team and also to work closely with top class Universities around the world.  In addition to this, you will have the opportunity in this role to use your scientific expertise to input directly into Unilever’s Sustainable Living Plan which lies at the core of Unilever’s strategy for the future.

Over the past 2 years, micriobiomics has thrown a new light on the human microbiome and identified numerous bacteria previously unknown to be present on human skin.  These new insights are now giving new leads into how human health and hygiene can be improved.  For Unilever this has wide reaching implications and this new approach will be exploited by Unilever across the whole product range giving rise to new innovations and superior consumer benefits.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

As a Microbiomics Science Leader your responsibilities will include the following:

• To drive the scientific vision for the future of microbiomics with Unilever
• Create and execute project plans to deliver new insights, leads and proprietary technology
• Create ambitious ideas and opportunities for new products and innovations relevant to Unilever’s business
• Evolve the technical and scientific requirements in Molecular Biology
• Build to become Unilever’s authority on Molecular Biology representing UL in this field to the outside world
• Create and manage research proposals with third party organisations
• Manage all project resources effectively agreeing appropriate workplans to ensure project delivery
• Organise the microbiomics skill base development to meet required business needs
• Supervise the work of the Microbiomics Team and Line Manage a group of 5-10 employees.
• Act as the Industrial Leader for a major project between Unilever and several other companies & universities

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

• A PhD in Molecular Biology or equivalent is essential and desirable that this is combined with some Post Doctural Molecular Biologist experience also
• Molecular Biology,  Biochemistry or Microbiology as 1st degree or equivalent
• Evidence of securing funding and winning grants
• Experience of building collaborations with external bodies.
• A strong scientific network and publication history in the field of molecular biology, with proven experience in the area of next generation sequencing applications
• Strong track record in science discovery or relevant delivery in Industry
• Experience of Managing projects to delivery
• Experienced and desire to be involved in Lab work/experimental data
