MedImmune: Associate Scientist II/Scientist I â Respiratory, Autoimmunity and Inflammation (RIA) Research
The RIA research group in Cambridge UK is seeking to recruit a high calibre scientist to enable progression of our industry-leading antibody drug project portfolio for the treatment of a range of diseases including asthma, COPD, IPF, IBD and SLE. Â Highly motivated and proactive scientists are invited to apply for the opportunity to join our team of professionals who are passionate about advancing science, technology and medicine with the aim to of discovering and developing novel therapeutics that will bring benefit to patients.
Summary of Role
The position will be instrumental in building decision-making data packages for one or two projects at a time that enables pivotal decision making for our expanding portfolio of biologics drug projects in asthma, COPD, IPF, IBD and SLE.
This is a "hands-on", laboratory-based scientific and technical role that forms an integral part of a dynamic team within RIA Research.  Likely examples of the successful candidateâs contribution are experimental design and execution leading to delivery of analysed and interpreted data from disease relevant cell-based assays, human patient sample analysis and primary human, mouse or non-human primate immune cell culture, differentiation and functional assays.
The individual should be enthusiastic to develop scientifically through critical review of the literature, presentation at conferences and authoring or contributing to patent applications and manuscripts for publication.
Core Responsibilities include:
- Design, execute and interpret primarily in vitro but sometimes ex vivo or in vivo studies and communicate outcomes to own team and/or relevant project team.Â
- Through current and critical appraisal of the literature actively contribute to biology input and biology strategy for your one or two drug / target validation projects.
- Actively participate in external collaborations related to your project(s).
- Propose and champion new targets and novel approaches for modulating RIA diseases.
Raise the internal and external scientific profile of RIA through publishing data in patents, peer reviewed journals and by presenting at conferences.
Your previous experience will clearly demonstrate:
- Good scientific knowledge of innate and adaptive immunity. Specific disease knowledge of asthma, COPD or IBD will be advantageous.
- "Hands-on" experience of, and competence in, two or more of the following:
- Broad skill base in standard protocols to understand the mechanisms underlying innate and adaptive immunity e.g. immune cell phenotyping by flow cytometry, T cell or macrophage polarisation, leukocyte chemotaxis, oxidative burst or phagocytosis.
- Developing and running in vitro, or ex vivo, cell-based assays/systems relevant to the study of asthma, COPD or IBD biology or stem cell/regenerative medicine.
- Designing and conducting in vivo pharmacology studies using standard models and methods for studying asthma, COPD or IBD or stem cell/regenerative medicine.
- Developing and running primary and secondary cell-based assays for drug discovery projects.
- Strong scientific rigour in assessing own data and that of others.
- Excellent interpersonal and oral/written communications skills.
- Ability to initiate, plan and execute scientific research under general supervision.
Education: PhD or BSc/MSc and relevant experience in a highly related life science discipline.
The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to:
- Independently design, execute and interpret specific in vitro and/or ex vivo or in vivo pharmacology studies and conduct broader scientific research with limited supervision.
- Make decisions and recommend plans, informed by their scientific knowledge and the high quality data that they generate.
- Work within project teams to provide high quality data in a timely manner.
- Innovatively apply technology to ensure scientific excellence and to maximise the value of their team for the portfolio.
- Maintain and further develop scientific expertise through critical review of the literature and active participation in the external scientific community through publication and presentation.
- Actively contribute to RIA Research target identification and propose and/or champion new targets.
