Physical Demands:
Testing performed requires ability to distinguish colors.
Lift boxes and equipment weighing up to 30 lbs.
Perform testing that require repetitive motions.
Work Environment:
Job duties require ability to complete Select Agent background clearance procedures.
Occasional overtime, share weekend/holiday coverage.
Travel independently by air or car to branch laboratories, conferences, and to perform field testing.
Work in a confined shared area with multiple technicians.
Tolerate strong odors and work with tissues, blood, and infectious agents.
Must wear laboratory required and supplied uniform/protective clothing and participate in Health Surveillance Program.
This position is subject to medical surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State laws and regulations and University policy.
This position may, at times, work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and infectious diseases are present. Specific hazards of the position are, but are not limited to rabies, chlamydia (psittacosis, ornithosis), west nile virus, influenza virus, newcastle disease virus, vesicular stomatitis virus, and cryptosporidia.
Due to potential work with poultry disease agents, handling and ownership of birds is restricted.

Minimum Qualifications:
-Experience performing molecular techniques in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory.
-Experience and skills in high volume diagnostic biotechnology methods, including: virus purification, protein profiles, electrophoresis, chromatography, immunoblotting, standard and realtime PCR, primer and probe design, hybridization, nucleic acid and protein conjugation, nucleic acid sequence analysis, DNA and RNA extraction and purification, molecular cloning, and phylogenetic analysis.
-Knowledge of and skills in virology, molecular biology, genetics, and immunology to read, understand, and follow published or documented techniques and procedures.
-Knowledge and skills to work with nucleic acid databases, including but not limited to GenBank, EMBL, DDBJ, and related software for sequence analysis and manipulation, primer and probe design, and molecular epidemiology.
-Microtechnique skills and experience to work with minute quantities of DNA , RNA, and reagents. Skills to avoid/prevent cross-contamination of extracted RNA or DNA from diagnostic specimens and reference materials. Skills to teach molecular techniques to staff, students, faculty, and visiting scientists.
-Knowledge and experience using judgment to critically evaluate new techniques, compare to existing technologies, modify and adapt for novel diagnostic applications.
-Skills in mathematics and chemistry to perform calculations and prepare reagents, buffers, and dilutions.
-Skills to use and maintain laboratory balances, scales, pH meters, autoclaves, and associated equipment for preparation of buffers and media.
-Skills to work with and maintain automated equipment, including ELISA readers, washers, computers and computer-interfaced equipment, thermocyclers, array readers, scanners, spectrophotomers, fluorescence readers, micro-pipettes, dispensers, centrifuges, electrophoresis, equipment, incubators.
-Skills to adhere to diagnostic lab quality assurance and control procedures and standards and understand document control procedures.
-Documentation and computer skills to perform data entry and retrieval, and to search relevant databases and record systems.
-Skills to organize and prioritize workload.
Preferred Qualifications:
-Skills to prepare and maintain aseptic sample extractions, virus recovery, molecular analyses, and preparation of reference materials.
-Skills to store and track samples and reference materials.
-Skills to perform cost-effective ordering and/or use of laboratory and office supplies and equipment.
