IT Development Manager Biotechnology - Monsanto - St. Louis, MO

Insect Control and Herbicide Tolerance platforms within Agronomics Traits program are involved in research and development of next generation agricultural biotechnology products. These processes require many different data systems and tools to design and perform research experiments, track them through the pipeline and analyze and interpret results.

The candidate will work as part of a matrix organization to identify, test and validate novel insecticidal toxins for the next generation of transgenic crops. He/she will be responsible for implementing new IT solutions, supporting and improving current analysis programs as well as work across functions and third-party vendors to ensure research IT needs are met.

The scientific results will help drive the understanding of research data and facilitate various advancement decisions in the pipeline. The data systems will support all steps of the Ag Traits pipeline, including laboratory information management (LIMS), bioinformatics workflows, databases for storing assay results and associated meta-data and reports and user interfaces for making data available to researchers.

Responsibilities:The individual will:
1) Develop goals, detailed requirements, and project plans for delivering and enhancing software solutions.
2) Oversee the planning and development of data systems, reports, and tools to store and integrate bioinformatics, assay, and status tracking data.
3) Identify and leverage interactions with information management professionals in Biotech and our IT Department, TPS.
4) Ensure that tools are developed and supported to allow aggressive timelines for delivering the Ag Traits goals.
5) Align software requirements to support laboratory processes and software systems that span geographical sites.
6) Prepare and provide updates on detailed plans and recommendations of IT solutions to Ag Traits leadership for prioritization.

M.S. in Genomics, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or other related discipline and at least 7 years of experience in leading projects dealing with laboratory information management systems and high throughput laboratory data systems.

B.S. in Genomics, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or other related discipline and at least 10 years of experience in leading projects dealing with laboratory information management systems and high throughput laboratory data systems.

The candidate must:

  • have a documented track record of delivering data systems to support high throughput discovery pipelines.
  • have comprehensive working knowledge of experimental and/or data integration and mining aspects of high throughput functional or structural genomics projects, with experience in high throughput screening or protein-based studies particularly useful.
  • have a minimum of 3 years of experience in implementing LIMS and complex integrated data and software systems to support life science research.
  • have demonstrated experience with SQL and large-scale database management systems (e.g., Oracle, MySQL, SQL Server).
  • have at least 4 years of programming experience in one or more of these languages: .NET (Visual Basic, C#, or C++), Java, Python, or Perl.
