Lonza: Cell Culture Development Scientist
A new opportunity has arisen for a Scientist to join our Cell Culture Development department, based in Slough, UK. As a Scientist you will provide laboratory-based practical expertise as well as scientific assessment. You will proactively seek alternative solutions to problems and makes decisions based on the best available scientific data.
About the Department:
The Cell Culture Development department at Lonza Biologics is a Global Centre of Excellence for the creation, development and characterisation of mammalian cell processes for the production of a wide variety of biopharmaceuticals. The department is responsible for the successful delivery of cell culture processes from pre-clinical stage to post commercial launch. The departmentâs 5 main disciplines are molecular biology, cell line construction, cell culture development, cell line characterisation and cell banking.
Key Responsibilities of the Role:
To complete experimental tasks to a high quality standard as directed and prepare customer communications for scientific assessment and decision making purposes. Key tasks will include:
Cell Line Construction:
â¢Â        Molecular Biology
â¢Â        Cell Culture
â¢Â        Transfection
â¢Â        Automated single cell sorting
â¢Â        Automated plate screening
â¢Â        Productivity assessments
â¢Â        Fed batch assessment (growth, productivity and product quality)
â¢Â        Cryopreservation of pre-seed stock
       Bioreactor:
â¢Â        Preparation of flask inoculum cell cultures
â¢Â        Set up and operation of inoculum cell culture bag bioreactors
â¢Â        Set-up and operation of miniature (15mL) up to 10L laboratory-scale bioreactors (stirred or air-lift)
â¢Â        Daily sampling and nutrient analysis
â¢Â        Nutrient feed preparation and additions
â¢Â        Harvest and primary recovery
Candidates will require a minimum of a BSc in a biological science or will have practical relevant experience. A theoretical knowledge or practical experience in upstream processing (eg. vector construction, transfection, cell line selection, operation of bioreactors, cell culture and aseptic processing, harvesting and primary recovery) would be an advantage but is not essential.
After training successful applicants would be expected to join weekend, bank holiday and on-call rotas.
During busy periods and after appropriate training you may be expected to undertake short term secondments in other departments within Process Development (Purification Development and Process Analytics).
