MAJOR FUNCTION
  • Accountable for the design strategy of the project(s) in Metabolic Engineering for Cosmetic applications.
  • Develop a strong scientific network in is field, with a primary focus on California Universities and Start-ups.
  • Responsible for providing excellence in synthetic biology design while contributing to the project strategies, planning and deliverables.
  • The ability to communicate with customers, lead and manage projects, design, test, document, and communicate results to diverse audiences are important aspects of this role.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Identify and propose California based external experts and/or CROs for potential collaborations
  • Enhance current collaborations in California in the area of Metabolic Engineering and Synthetic Biology and co-develop new technologies with Universities and Start-ups
  • Coordinate projects between L’Oréal laboratories and external collaborators
  • Demonstrate creativity and resourcefulness in proactively identifying and proposing solutions to issues that may arise during the course of a research project
  • Interface with business development, contract, and patent attorneys to execute contracts and patents
  • Approximately 20 - 30% travel
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Metabolic Engineering, Microbial Genetics, or a related field with 1-5 years combined R&D experience in industry (consumer products/pharma) and academia
  • Knowledge of the latest technologies in a specific field of expertise, and an initial strong network of external technical experts with a focus on California Universities
  • Expertise in cutting edge systems biology and synthetic genomics approaches to metabolic engineering challenges for chemicals and biomolecules production.
  • A strong background in microbial genetics to lead the development of necessary tools to incorporate and optimize enzymes into host strains.
  • Proven success in an industrial setting of engineering strains to meet performance targets.
  • Consistent, demonstrated ability to innovate in all settings.
  • Preferred experience in some related work streams: gene discovery, bioinformatics, microbial physiology, fermentation development, or analytical chemistry.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience in growing and managing high performing teams
